Throughout the period 2008-2011 he co-drove with Matthew Wilson in the Ford Focus RS (2008-10) and Ford Fiesta RS (2011), competing in the full WRC series. The pair achieved seventh place in the overall classification in 2009 and again in 2011, when they were placed fourth in the Repco Rally Australia , his best WRC result.

2008 saw Van Merksteijn alter between a number of cars, the Evo VIII and IX's and a Ford Focus RS WRC 06. He also used an 07-spec Focus WRC for the final Dutch Rally Championship round. He only contested in two Dutch Rally rounds, finishing second in both rounds.
The Focus RS WRC 07 is based on the 2006 model, and according to Ford's technical director Christian Loriaux "the changes on the new car are mainly to save weight and to improve efficiency, driveability and performance at the bottom end of the range." [3]

The car won on only its third outing in 1999 and remained an ever-present threat, but title success didn’t come until the third evolution of the Focus in 2006. Finn Marcus Grönholm guided the Focus RS WRC 06 to Ford’s first world title in 27 years and stayed on to help Wilson’s team retain the title 12 months later.
