🍻 Ford Focus 1.8 Tdci Cold Start Problems
All the noises, when they occur, go away after a further 10 - 15 secs or so, never to reoccur until (perhaps) the next totally cold start (after overnight cooling). 1. "Diesel rattle". Well, more of a clatter with a half to one second 'pulsing'. As above, starts a few secs after engine is running.
I have recently purchased a 2009 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6TDCi (109PS) Hatchback. The heater blower is working i.e you set it to 1, 2, 3 or 4 and the blower changes speed/force. The blend control is also working i.e you can point it to windscreen/front vents or foot well etc.
After the 2 minute period is up, you've got to turn the ignition off before attempting to start the vehicle. This fault would be apparent by the PATS LED flashing. If the immobilizer is working, when you first turn the ignition on, the PATS LED will light continuously for a couple seconds before going out.
TheOneAndOnly. Having an issue with my S-Max recently where it could start and run no problem for a few days (or more) then intermitenly not start, even if left over night. It then may start after 2-5 goes of turning over. I've gone to two mechanics, full service, brand new battery, diagnosic computers show no codes at all.
Ford Focus 1.8tdci - focus tdci 1.8 issue starting when cold. Guys at a bit of a loss with this one, done the usual search's on the net without a conclusion. When the cold weather sets in it is a nightmare to start, car has been on diagnostics and no fault codes come up, its a 54 plate with 75k on.
Replace injector fuel pipes. 6. Cam belt needs to be removed so will be replaced. 7. Possibility of injectors needing to be replaced (will know after) Cost will be around almost £1400, or if injectors needed doing £2000 approx. Garage also had a Transit van with pump problems too brought in on same day.
I've just bought a 1.8 tdci sport focus and I've noticed recently that it's taking it's time to start in the mornings. I just put it down to the cold mornings but it's also doing it now when ever I start it when the engines warm too.
Ford Sync 1.1 - you’ll need a USB drive formatted as FAT32 If you search the forum you’ll see that there were some issues with the later firmware for 1.1 as hosted on the Ford servers. One of the members on here was hosting and providing a link to a functioning update.
Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi, 2001. - Occasional rough starting - BenG I'd say it's worth finding out if you have the latest ECU update, as this made my car a much better starter from cold and it was a later year than yours (2003), so I'm guessing yours might not have had it unless it's been serviced at a main dealer recently.
Ford Focus Saloon 1.8 TDCI 2003. - diesel pump and injector nightmare! - benty77 I had issues with a 02 Focus tdci starting (1 year ago), I replaced the battery and it was then good. The problem with it now is the high pressure diesel pump and probably the new injectors which the garage fitted without first doing a thorough check of the pumps
The EGR requires reasonably regular cleaning. The EGR valve on the 1.8 TDCI (Lynx) engine is integrated in the Inlet manifold. I identified the problem by removing the EGR actuator and testing the valve with a set of needle nose pliers. First, shutting it completely, the engine started normally.

It can be caused by a breakdown in the CANbus system. Just like Damian says, there will be codes, probably U codes, that can be read by a good scanner like Forscan.
